NAB: Blackmagic Targets Hollywood With New Ursa 4K Camera With Super 35 Sensor

Blackmagic Ursa PL - H 2014

The “upgradable” camera system includes EF and PL mount model.

LAS VEGAS – Blackmagic Design unveiled a new 4K camera line, Ursa, aimed at high-end features, TV and documentary work on Monday at the NAB Show.
The news arrived in an increasingly crowded market for 4K-capable cameras. Also on Monday, Blackmagic competitor AJA revealed that it is entering the camera business with a $9,000 professional 4K camera.
Blackmagic introduced four Ursa models, including the Ursa PL (supports PL mount lenses, pictured above) and Ursa EF  (EF mount lenses). Both use a Super 35 sized global shutter sensor and offer 12 stops of dynamic range. The EF model will be the first out the door; it’s scheduled to ship in early summer for $6,000.
The Ursa broadcast B4 model, scheduled for availability in late 2014, features a (upgradable) broadcast video Ultra HD sensor and B4 lens mountt. An HDMI model has no sensor and its lens mount is replaced by a “cheese plate” of mounting points and a HDMI input, allowing any third party camera to use the camera body features.
Features include a 10-inch fold out on-set monitor and internal dual Raw and Apple ProRes recorders. The camera package includes a copy of Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve color grading software.
