Did Patrick Stewart Just Accidentally Spoil 'Days of Future Past'?

 Sir Patrick Stewart Headshot - P 2012

Has Patrick Stewart accidentally spoiled the fate of one of the characters from next month’s X-Men: Days of Future Past? The actor’s comments in a recent interview suggest that one of the characters from the latest installment of the X-Men franchise won’t make it all the way to the end of the movie. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

During a conversation with MTV, Stewart is asked if he would return in X-Men: Apocalypse, scheduled for 2016. His response raises some questions about quite what happens in next month’s movie.

“I don't see why not,” he said. “That is one of the blessings about fantasy and science fiction: You're never really dead. I would love to come back and do some more.”
Wait: never really dead?
This doesn’t necessarily mean that the elder Professor Xavier will meet his end at the hands of the Sentinels — an outcome that seems particularly easy to reverse considering that the entire concept of the movie is an attempt to change the X-Men timeline, of course. After all, Stewart’s Professor X has already returned from the seeming-dead, considering his apparent demise in X-Men: The Last Stand; he could simply have been using that return as an example of the ease of return when you least expect it.
Then again, perhaps he really is telling us not to expect him to make it through Days of Future Past. That said, there are two Charles Xaviers in the movie, so at least we’ll have a spare even in a worst case scenario.
X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23.
